Introduction to Leather As individual as you are : Natural leather is one of the most individual items you will ever buy. No two pieces are the same. Each hide differs from the next in grain, texture and colour. This subtle process of differentiation is just part of leather's enduring appeal. Perfect Imperfections : Indentations, scars and imperfections are all common on good leather. These are in fact what sets it apart from cheap imitations. They impart the very character which makes it so attractive in the first place. Once bitten : Once bitten by flies and insects, cattle often retain these tiny marks giving a distinctive marking on the hide. They too, become part of the material's unique character and do not affect the performance of the leather in any way. Marks of Quality : Large badly healed marks and scratches are rejected during the manufacturing process, however smaller ones that add special personality of the individual piece of furniture are retained. There will also be colour variations within the leather, which are a feature, not a fault. Leather hides vary in thickness and therefore feel and colour. Creasing : The luxurious softness of modern leather means that, often, wrinkles and small creases will form during use. This is perfectly normal and in time, enhances the look of the material. |
Distinctive Types of Leather Aniline/ Natural Leather : This leather retains the natural grain and is characterised by its exceptionally soft feel in comparison to corrected grain leather. This leather is coloured with a dye that completely penetrates the hide, showing off the surface contours, indentations and marks in their best possible light. The tanning process leaves its pores open and capable of diffusion, permitting the leather to absorb and give off bodily moisture thus keeping it at a temperature pleasant to touch. All scars, marks and grain variations will show. They should be regarded as hallmarks which bear testimony to the natural origins of leather. This leather is more sensitive to light and should therefore be protected from the effects of direct sun and halogen light. Corrected Grain Leather : Buffing removes most scars and marks from the leather. Then a brand new grain is embossed onto the surface to replace the natural one. The corrected leather has an even surface coating that enhances the leather's rubbing and light flatness, while slightly reducing its water vapour permeability. Semi Aniline Leathers : Retain the natural grain but receive a light sprayed coat on the grain side after drum dying, this is done to gain a more specific colour and to improve it's light fastness. Natural marks like healed scars etc. can still be seen, although shading and some other marks may be hidden. |
Information on WhatNot Leathers Portofino All Colours - Natural Finish Cow Hide Antique Pull Ups : This leather has a natural marbled look about it. It has a shine on the surface but you can pick up the subtle colour shading of a natural skin. Much like your own hand, which is not one flat colour. It creases less than the buffalo pull up leather but being natural it will age beautifully. Avoid direct sunlight and light colours should be scotch guarded to prevent stains. Average Hide Size : 3.8 m2 - 5 m2 Luxury Leather - All colours - Cow Hide Top Grade Skins : This type of leather allows us to get specific colours, with an even colour distribution for a luxury contemporary look. The natural grain is seen coming through this leather i.e not a full corrected grain. The feel is much softer and there may be the odd natural marking and brand marks that show through. Average Hide Size : 4 m2 - 5 m2 Okavango - Buffed Leather - Natural Finish Cow Hide : This is an uneven two tone look that is created by lightly buffing off the colour from the top grain. Generally these hides do have some surface scratches which enhance the worn look of this leather. It does have a slightly sueded finish, this can be scotch guarded for further protection. Average Hide Size : 3.8 m2 - 5 m2 Okavango Bovine - All Colours - Cow Hide : This is a semi-aniline leather which means that the natural grain of the hide comes through but it gets a light spray of colour to get colour depth and makes it more light fast. Compared to some corrected grains this is a better product and will age naturally without cracking or pealing. Average Hide Size : 3.8 m2 - 5 m2 Karabib Leather - Cow Hide : This is also very similar to the Okavango range but has been lightly buffed to get a smoother look once made up i.e semi-corrected. Average Hide Size : 4 m2 - 5 m2 Nubuck Suede - Cow Hide : Nubuck Suede is drum dyed and finished like all aniline leathers; this gets a soil repellant finish in dying but is more susceptible to staining. This has a pebble like finish which is the grain side. Suede is the reverse side which has a fine hair like finish that moves when brushed or handled, this pile will flatten with extended use, this is characteristic of Nubuck Suede. Light surface scratches are characteristic of this leather. Average Hide Size : 3.8 m2 - 5 m2 Kudu / Oryx - Game Skin : This is mostly finished in aniline, drum dyed and lightly finished. It has scratches and most hides may have a hole somewhere on the hide but it has a fantastic soft glove leather feel and bigger grain that only game leather has. Average Hide Size : 2 m2 - 3 m2 Sienna / Corrected Grains - Cow Hide (Non Selected) : This leather goes through a stucco process to fill scratches, tick bites etc. and then is drum dyed. It is then buffed, sprayed to the colour required and then a grain print is applied and the leather is finished. There are many different qualities and finishes in corrected grain. They should not be too thin as it will have too much stretch. The hides should be dyed to a similar colour as the top coat colour. Consult the suppliers for further details. Antique Cracked - Water Buffalo Hide : This has the cracked look across the whole hide. This effect can vary from fine to heavy with in the hide and from hide to hide. It is great for ottomans, headboards and dining chairs where it will look authentic. It is more difficult to get colour consistency because of the processing. Regal : This is a genuine oil pull up. Hides have a smoother shinier finish but light healed scratches and shading can be seen when pulled which is part of the look and characteristics of the leather. NB: Hides will seem darker because of the oil but show more of the colour when upholstered. Average Hide Size : 4 m2 - 5 m2 Pista : This leather has a lightly waxed finish and has an aged look about it because of the irregular broad creased look given to it. Natural under the surface markings can be seen more in the lighter colours. It will also lighten in colour where it is pulled tight i.e arms, base etc. Average Hide Size : 4 m2 - 5 m2 Antique : This is also lightly waxed but has an aged look with a finer crackle/ crease with all the same characteristics as Pista. Average Hide Size : 4 m2 - 5 m2 Safari : This is a faded/ shaded look which is reminiscent of the faded worn old leathers, a bit like the Okavango buffed leathers, but has a sealed in finish so it will repel liquids and be easier to keep clean. Needs to be seen in full hides to be understood and appreciated. Average Hide Size : 4 m2 - 5 m2 (still under construction) |
Cleaning Instructions All the leathers mentioned (except Nubuck Suede) can be wiped with a damp cloth or dry cleaned - for a general maintenance, dust or vacuum. Certain leathers may benefit from a leather cream but check this on an area or sample first. Most sealed leathers should not require creams etc. for many years unless in direct sunlight. Stains & Protectors : Scotch Guard or Protex can be applied to most leathers and suedes but do check first. Whatnot has a range of very good cleaners, creams, balms and protectors. Please check to see how these may affect the leather or suedes, in an area less visible i.e underside of cushion or inside arm below the cushion. |
